Understanding Wheeler County Releases
A Wheeler County jail release record closes one booking. It identifies the person, the booking, and the manner and time in which that period of local custody ended. It does not, by itself, say that the criminal case ended. Someone may post bond and leave the jail while the charge remains pending. Another person may finish a local sentence. A third may leave Wheeler County Jail in restraints for another county, TDCJ, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. Those are all exits from the local jail, but only some are releases to the community.
The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office holds the operational booking and release facts. The court file explains the legal event, such as a bond order, dismissal, judgment, sentence, probation order, or jail-time credit. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice covers state imprisonment and later parole, mandatory supervision, or discharge. Federal and immigration cases use still other systems. Reading the disposition literally prevents a common error: “no longer here” does not always mean free from custody.
- Release
- The end of a specific custody event, which may be into the community or to another authority.
- Discharge
- Completion of an agency's sentence or supervision obligation, subject to that agency's definition.
- Time served
- A local sentence satisfied through credited confinement.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that may cause another agency to take custody.
Wheeler County Release Paths
The final line of the Wheeler booking matters more than a bare status label. The sheriff has not published a local code legend, so a response with an abbreviation should be paired with a request for the database definition. Common concepts can guide the next check, but they must not be presented as Wheeler's exact field names.
| Exit type | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or personal bond | The person left local custody while later court events may remain. | Bond order and court docket |
| Time served or sentence complete | The local custodian calculated that confinement was satisfied. | Judgment, sentence, and jail-credit entries |
| Court order, dismissal, or acquittal | The order controls the legal result; the jail record fixes the actual exit time. | Signed order and chronological docket |
| Parole or mandatory supervision | A TDCJ prisoner enters supervised community release. | TDCJ and Board of Pardons and Paroles record |
| Transfer or detainer | Custody continues with another authority. | Receiving-agency locator or acceptance record |
Escape, death, a hospital movement, or a data correction can also remove a name from a jail display without a routine community release. The durable answer is the booking-ending disposition and destination, checked against the next agency when a transfer occurred.
Wheeler County Release Record Fields
Because the sheriff publishes no field list, the following are precise request terms, not a promise that every Wheeler County response contains every item. Give the full booked name and aliases, date of birth or another disambiguator, and an approximate booking date. A booking number, warrant number, or cause number helps staff avoid a same-name error.
| Requested field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Booking number and booked name | The exact custody episode and identity used by the jail |
| Booking and release date/time | When Wheeler custody began and ended |
| Release disposition and destination | Community exit, bond, completion, or receiving authority |
| Charges, bond, warrant, and case numbers | The court matter connected to the booking |
| Arresting and transfer agencies | Which offices created or continued custody |
| Court and cause number | The route to the surviving legal record |
| Booking photograph | The image tied to that particular admission |
A release sheet answers physical custody. It does not prove acquittal, dismissal, the end of probation, or the absence of another warrant. Wheeler County court records often supply the missing legal context. TDCJ records must be used when the local disposition shows a state transfer.
Request Wheeler County Release Records
The official sheriff page provides contact details but no public request portal or designated email. Under Government Code §552.234, an office that designates and posts request addresses may require use of those channels. Call first to confirm any accepted electronic address. Written requests may be mailed to the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office, P.O. Box 88, Wheeler, TX 79096, faxed to 806-826-3458, or delivered to 7944 US Highway 83.
- Identify one booking with the full booked name, birth date, and approximate arrest date. Add a booking or cause number if known.
- Ask for the booking and release times, disposition, destination or receiving agency, related charge and bond fields, code legend, and booking photograph.
- Request an electronic copy and ask for an itemized estimate before charges exceed a limit you select.
- If material may be confidential, ask the office to redact that part and release the segregable public remainder.
- Compare the result with the proper court docket or receiving-agency record.

Chapter 552 calls for prompt production. If records cannot be produced within ten business days, §552.221 requires written certification and a reasonable availability date. That ten-day point is not a universal delivery deadline. Copy and labor charges must follow the state cost rules, and a narrow electronic request can reduce both delay and expense.
Texas Law on Wheeler Releases
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 begins with public access, yet specific exceptions and confidentiality laws still apply. Active law-enforcement interests under §552.108, juvenile rules, victim and medical information, privacy, criminal-history limits, sealing, and expunction may require withholding or redaction. A requester should seek the public portions instead of assuming the whole packet is open or closed.
Retention is a documented local gap. Wheeler County offers no public booking archive and posts no online retention promise. Internal records remain subject to the applicable local-government schedule and any investigation or litigation hold, but the correct record-series classification should be confirmed with the sheriff. Under Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A, an expunction order can require covered agencies to remove, destroy, or return records. A nondisclosure order under Government Code Chapter 411 is different and does not erase the physical event.
Which Wheeler Clerk Has Records?
Wheeler County splits the court trail between two clerks at the courthouse. The District Clerk handles felony district-court matters. The County Clerk is the usual route for county-level misdemeanor dispositions and provides an external online-records link. Both offices close at noon on Friday, an important detail before a records visit.
Ask for the cause number, bond or release order, plea, judgment, sentence, jail credit, dismissal, probation terms, revocation, and discharge order as applicable. Read the docket in time order. A bond order before the jail timestamp may explain release; a dismissal filed later explains the case outcome, not necessarily the earlier exit. Monthly Office of Court Administration reports are aggregate activity counts and cannot verify one person's release.
Find Released Wheeler County Inmates
No official Wheeler County online roster or historical release feed was located. That makes the phone, record, court, and receiving-agency chain essential. A current roster, even if one later appears, would mainly answer who remains held. A person who has left Wheeler custody will normally need an event record or another system.
- Use the official sheriff page to confirm the jail contact, then call with a full name, birth date, and approximate booking date. Ask for the exact release time, disposition, and destination.
- Check Texas IVSS-Counties. Select Wheeler only if it appears in the live portal. A missing county or person is inconclusive.
- Search the correct clerk for the bond order, judgment, disposition, sentence, and jail-credit trail.
- Request the sheriff's booking and release sheet for durable proof.
- If the record says transfer, follow TDCJ, another jail, BOP or USMS, or ICE. Do not label the transfer a community release.
The Wheeler County 24-hour release route explains how to request a precisely bounded daily export. For a named person, the steps above give stronger confirmation than a broad recent-booking list.
TDCJ Wheeler Release Search
The TDCJ Online Inmate Search applies after a person enters Texas state custody. It is not the lookup for someone who merely bonded out of Wheeler County Jail. Number searches reduce same-name mistakes, while name searches need more care.
| Search field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| TDCJ number | Use the seven-digit state corrections identifier when known. |
| SID number | Use the Texas State Identification number for a close match. |
| Last and first name | Combine with gender and race to narrow results. |
| Detail labels | Record location, offense, county, sentence, projected release, maximum sentence, and parole-review data exactly as displayed. |
The details screen may show a Projected Release Date, Maximum Sentence Date, and parole-review status. A projection is not a physical release timestamp, and an approval does not mean processing is complete. For an absent or incomplete historical entry, email pia@tdcj.texas.gov with the full name and TDCJ number, or exact birth date or approximate age and county of conviction. TDCJ says this information service is free and does not provide photographs.
The TDCJ inmate-information hub leads into those official channels. Its layout and state release labels are visible in the captured official screen below.
This state source becomes relevant only when Wheeler's local record points to TDCJ custody or a Texas prison history.
Wheeler County Recent Releases
The sheriff website has no official current roster, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, booking archive, release-date field, photo feed, or published update cadence. A commercial booking gallery is not a release list. It may retain old entries, omit records, or confuse an arrest date with a release date.
For a date-based list, request an existing jail-management export for an exact period. Ask for all bookings released between stated start and end timestamps and request names, booking numbers, booking and release times, dispositions, case numbers, and photos if desired and disclosable. The Public Information Act generally gives access to existing records; it does not require the sheriff to create a new analysis.
Wheeler Parole and Probation
Parole follows release from TDCJ and is administered by the TDCJ Parole Division under the state process. Probation, called community supervision in Texas, is ordered by a court and handled through a Community Supervision and Corrections Department. Wheeler probation belongs to a five-county CSCD grouping with Gray, Hemphill, Lipscomb, and Roberts counties. A person who posts bond is not automatically on either form of supervision.
Use the TDCJ search and release certificate for parole, and the court docket plus the CJAD location directory for probation. The final proof is a discharge or completion record from the responsible authority. A release date can be years earlier than the end of supervision.
Wheeler Release Alerts and Transfers
Texas retired county VINE on August 31, 2025 and moved to Texas IVSS-Counties the next day. The portal can provide booking, release, court-event, death, escape, and TDCJ-transfer notices through call, text, or email for participating county data. Wheeler participation must be checked live. State-prison notices are separate through TDCJ Victim Services, and DHS-VINE is reserved for qualifying immigration matters.
Federal prison history belongs in the BOP Inmate Locator, which covers federal inmates from 1982 onward. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” ends BOP custody only; PACER supplies the judgment and supervised-release record. ICE's online detainee locator checks current adult ICE custody and is not a historical release certificate. A Wheeler disposition of “released to ICE” is a transfer, not community release.
Where Wheeler Release Records Live
Each system answers a narrow custody question. Matching the record to the authority is more reliable than repeating one name across unrelated commercial sites.
| System | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Wheeler sheriff record | Local booking end, date, time, disposition, and destination | No public online search or recent-release feed |
| Wheeler court file | Bond order, disposition, sentence, probation, and discharge | Does not replace the jail's exact physical exit time |
| TDCJ search | State custody, projection, parole review, and state release | Not for a simple county bond-out |
| Texas IVSS-Counties | Participating county events and alerts | Coverage and updates can vary |
| BOP or ICE locator | Federal prison or current immigration custody | Neither proves every later custody or historical event |
Wheeler County Release Facility
Wheeler County Jail is the only locally identified detention facility in the official sweep. Sheriff Tim Reeves's office operates it for local pretrial and other lawfully committed people. A person may return to the community, move into TDCJ, transfer to another county or federal authority, or become subject to an immigration hold. The local release line and receiving-system acceptance should agree.
No TDCJ prison, BOP institution, ICE detention center, or separate municipal lockup was officially identified inside Wheeler County. Those statewide and federal systems may still serve a Wheeler case after transfer, but they are not local Wheeler facilities and should not be treated as such.
